Creating Quiz Questions
After setting your quiz settings, you're ready to start creating quiz questions. To start creating questions, click the Questions tab at the top of the quiz screen.
Creating Individual Questions
There are a variety of question types available in Canvas. These include:
- Multiple Choice
- True/False
- Fill in the Blank
- Fill in Multiple Blanks
- Multiple Answers
- Etc.
For a full list of question types and their descriptions, visit the Canvas Guide regarding creating individual questions, and scroll to the bottom of the page.
Start by clicking the + New Question button, and then selecting the type of question that you'd like to create from the Question Type dropdown menu. You'll then enter your question text in the Question field. This field is a full rich content editor, and therefore can be populated with any sort of media you would normally be able to add to a page using the editor.
Next, you'll enter the possible answers. The correct answer is indicated by a green arrow and the text “Correct Answer” next to it. How answers to quiz questions are entered will depend on the question type. By default, the correct answer is set as the first option, but can be changed by clicking the arrow to the left of the correct answer that you’ve created.
You can enter feedback for correct and incorrect responses using the bubbles below the questions. These are feedback comments that will be given when a student selects the designated answer. You can also leave universal feedback for correct, incorrect, and all responses using the three feedback bubbles below all of the answer choices. The green bubble is feedback that will be given to any correct responses, the red bubble is feedback that will be given to any incorrect answer, and the blue bubble is feedback that will be given to all answers.
Click Update Question to finish the question. You can then repeat this process until all of your questions have been created.
Question Groups
You can also use Question Groups to add questions to a quiz. This allows you to leverage questions in a question bank. You can also utilize these groups to randomly select a set number of questions from a question bank. For example, you can choose to randomly select 5 questions from a question bank containing 10 questions. This means that each quiz will have 5 random questions from that bank, and students will be less likely to have the same questions.
You can add a question group by:
- Clicking the New Question Group button
- Entering the name of the question group,
- Setting the number of questions to be used
- And enter the points each question will be worth
After setting these options, you then have a few options for adding questions to a question group:
-
Link to a question bank - This will pull the designated amount of questions from a pre-existing question bank. If you haven't added a question bank, you'll see an option labelled "Unfiled Questions" which will contain all quiz questions that have been created in your course so far. Question banks can be created and managed by clicking Quizzes on the course navigation, and then clicking the gear icon in the upper right and selecting Manage Question Banks.
-
Add individual questions - You'll need to click the Create Group button before using this method. This functions exactly like the individual question creation, except these questions will now be grouped and a random sample can be grabbed from the group. You can do this by clicking the + button to the right of the question group and then creating your question.
Find Questions
The Find Questions option allows you to pull individual questions from a question bank that has already been created. An important thing to note here is that any questions that are updated in the question bank after they've been added to a quiz, will NOT be updated in the quiz. You will see question banks for all of your courses in this view.
To use the Find Questions method of adding questions to your quiz:
- Click the Find Questions button to add individual questions from a question bank.
- Click the name of the question group that you want to use on the left
- Check the question(s) that you want to add to the quiz
- If you want to add the questions to a question group, click the dropdown to either select an existing question group, or create a new one by selecting [New Group]
- Click the Add Questions button once you’ve selected all of the questions you want to add to your quiz.
Be sure to click Save once you’re done adding questions to your quiz. You can then click Preview to see what students will see when they take the quiz. Remember, students will not be able to access the quiz until you click the Publish button, which will then turn green and read “Published”. Once a student has submitted a quiz attempt, you will no longer be able to unpublish the quiz.
