Week #10

The data collected and feedback given during Academic Monitoring leads to in-the-moment decisions about next steps (a Pivot) which ultimately improves student outcomes and leads to Academic Scholarship, Continual Improvement and Problem Solving. Teachers use the Tracking Not Watching + the Pivot to be responsive to the exact needs of ALL learners.

Use the scenarios below to see examples of how and when to Pivot in your classroom.

Scenario 1

You are in the middle of your guided practice during your "Academic Monitoring" laps you notice all the students have the correct answer.

Pivot #1 Stamp Answer & Move On

When: Students all have the correct answer!

Pivot Statements:

"I see that all of you have got it!"
"The answer is indeed..."
"You are unstoppable!

Scenario 2

During your "Academic Monitoring" laps you notice half to most of the students are unproductively struggling.

Pivot #2 Stop and Reteach

When: Majority are unproductively struggling.

Pivot Statements:

"I want everyone to pause where you are and I am going ti review a few things that will help."
"This is a difficult concept! What have we learned that can help us?"

Pivot #3 Guided Discourse

When: 50% are unproductively struggling.

Pivot Statement:

"The room is split so we need to deliberate. I am going to show two solutions and you are going to discuss which one is incorrect and why."

Scenario 3

During your "Academic Monitoring" laps you notice some of the students are unproductively struggling while others have a good grasp.

Pivot #4:

Quick Individual Intervention

When: A few students have incorrect answers or are struggling.

Pivot Statement:

"I'm glad I saw that mistake. It teaches us something we have to fix before we've mastered this"

Pivot #5:

Show Call

When: Several students have the same error. An example is available.

Pivot Statement:

"I'm noticing that some of us are getting an incorrect answer"

Pivot #6:

Plan Future Action

When: A small group of students are struggling.

Pivot Statements:

"We are going to focus on our areas of uncertainty for homework"
"Tomorrow, I will work with you in a small group during center time until we get it just right."
